About Arthur A. Busch


Many in Michigan and the Detroit area know Art Busch as the former prosecuting attorney for Genesee County from 1993-2005. What they may not realize is that he has 18 years experience a criminal defense lawyer, writing wills, powers of attorney and serving as a probate lawyer.


Art Busch was born and raised in Flint, Michigan.  He attended Flint Public Schools and graduated in 1972 from Flint Southwestern High School.  He went on to obtain a BA and Masters Degree from Michigan State University.  Mr. Busch attended the Thomas M. Cooley Law School i Lansing, Michigan. His law school class was one of the most distinguished law classes in the schools history.  Arthur's classmates included former Governor John Engler, numerous Michigan judges, and a classmate who holds the current record for obtaining the highest medical malpractice verdicts in the State of Michigan and at one time the United States.


Mr. Busch has a long record of accomplishments and legal "firsts" over his 30 year career.  As a defense lawyer and county prosecutor he has been responsible for over 40,000 felony cases and supervised in excess of 600 death investigations.  


In 2003, Arthur Busch appeared and argued a murder case before the United States Supreme Court winning 9-0.  It was the first time in the history of Genesee County that one of its criminal cases was heard and decided by the United States Supreme Court.  

 

            Much of his work today has been to prevent elder abuse.  He handles cases on behalf of families who have elderly parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles etc. who have been exploited or abused. He is now helping families protect their parents by obtaining a guardianship or conservatorship.  


            As an experienced criminal defense lawyer he can help people charged with a traffic ticket, DUI trucking violation, domestic violence, retail fraud, drugged driving, minor in possession  MIP, drug cases such as marijuana, cocaine or prescription drug possession,  criminal sexual conduct, CSC, embezzlement, computer crime and gun cases.

  • Directed investigation and prosecution regarding an unusual school shooting drawing national and international media attention. The case involved the school shooting death of first grader Kayla Rolland by a six-year-old classmate.
  • Appointed a case evaluator under MCR 2.404 by the Genesee County Circuit Court. Evaluate civil litigation disputes for the purpose of settlement.
  • Appointed as a fact-finder by Michigan Employment Relations Commission. Successfully served as a neutral in several public sector labor disputes.

Genesee County Prosecutor's Office  

Prosecuting Attorney  1993 -2005

     

Chief Law Enforcement Official (county pop, 438,000) responsible all felony and state misdemeanor prosecutions. Lead trial attorney in high profile cases including homicide. Directed sensitive criminal investigations of violations of public trust, homicide, drug distribution, police misconduct, civil rights, and election law.

 

Supervised a staff of approximately 85, including 42 assistant prosecuting attorneys located at multiple locations. Responsible for the administration of a $7.5 million dollar budget. Duties included Employee Relations, Staffing, Public Relations, Labor Relations, Facilities Management, Network Systems Management, Training and Employee Development, Governmental Relations, Budgeting, Federal and State Grant Management.  

     

Served as legal advisor to over 30 state and local police and administrative agencies. Coordinated initial investigations, trial preparation, and negotiations in highly complex criminal matters.

 

Maintained relationships with Federal and State agencies regarding legislation, interdepartmental relations, agreements, and grant activities.

Elected county official. Responsible for budgeting for the Genesee County government. The $200 million county budget with 1,000 employees.

     

Served as Vice-Chairman of the Board, Chair of Public Works Committee and Community and Economic Development Committees.

    

Projects: Bishop International Airport Authority. Genesee County acquired operational control of the airport. The takeover resulted in a new terminal and the airport was one of the fastest growing airports in America, a new $30 million jail, a $11 million courthouse.
